Almuñecar
Almuñecar, situated in the province of Granada at the andalusian mediterranean coastline, has a unique tropical microclimate. Because of this climate the coastline around Almuñecar is called "Costa Tropical" and has many tropical palms and fruits which you can not find anywhere else in europe. The former fishing village now mainly lives on the production of tropical fruits and tourism. Particularly large number of Spanish tourists can be found here who know the warm climate and tropical atmosphere to appreciate.
As usual in Spain also here in Almuñecar eating and drinking is an important part of everyday life. You can discover the local specialties in the typical bars and restaurants as "Tapas", which you get for free if you drink something there.
For excursions in the surroundings we reccommend the many miles of beaches with crystal clear waters and secluded bays, but there are also many places of historic interest. Phoenicians, Romans and Arabs inhabited the city for many years before the Catholics got it back in the 15th century and they left their marks in the city. The biggest and most important historic building in Almuñecar is the castle "San Miguel". The Archaeological Museum is also very recommendable. As one might suspect it, there is a beautiful tropical botanical garden with an incredible variety of palms and tropical plants ("El Majuelo"). The same biodiversity as in the botanic garden you can also find under water. In the aquarium "Aqua Tropic" they have huge water pools with many different and unusual fishes, lobsters, squids and much more. In the Ornithological Park "Loro-Sexi" you will find many different birds and parrots.
